You just HAD to delay the wet season another month, didn't you? Interesting to know: The Cedar fire was less than a acre in size when the first chopper arrived but the firefighters shift was about to end, so they turned around and went home to let the fire become the bigest disaster in San Diego County history. I guess the firefighter who presented this just forgot to mention this fact.

    • @flycaptron49
      @flycaptron49 Місяць тому

      The first chopper on scene was the SD County Sheriff, not being FIREFIGHTERS! They were the only unit to return to their base. The full wildland response by Cal Fire and USFS was still responding and engaged in the incident since the initial call. Ground access was very difficult and NE winds came up around 10pm, blowing up the wildfire causing ground resources to retreat to safety zones. None of these units went back home, as they stayed in the fight for the next week!

      @@flycaptron49 Oh. AI Overview When the first helicopter arrived at the 2003 Cedar Fire in San Diego County, the initial response was to drop water on the fire using a Bambi Bucket; however, due to policy, the water drop was cancelled shortly before reaching the fire due to the approaching sunset, a decision that was later heavily criticized.

    • @falseflagpsy-op
      @falseflagpsy-op 29 днів тому

      I was wrong, it was the Forest Service fire cheif's call to cancel the drop because of the Federal rules to prohibit firefighting aircraft from flying later than 30 minutes before sunset at that time , before night vision technologies were in use.

      @@flycaptron49 I was wrong. It was a Forest Service fire cheif who made the call to cancel the water drop because of FAA regulations restricting firefighting aircraft from flying later than 30 minutes before sunset. Maybe because back in 2003 the choppers weren't equiped with night vision technology.

    I was on initial dispatch with my handcrew that evening. We were sent to Pine Hills Ranger Station, it was decided not to send any personnel down into Cedar Creek Falls until daylight. Before long we could feel the east wind coming up over the ridge and she was off and running, by the time we got to the Ramona Country Estates it was total disaster everywhere. I remember sometime the next day, when the aircraft were up again, FC Serabia in AA330 saying it was around 80,000 acres and heading for the ocean.

    • @Hans-WernerBraun

      Yes, the reason is that we moved our servers from DIY to AWS, where apparently directory listings are not something AWS thinks normal mortals need. This is one of the loose ends in the current (i.e., the new) implementation that still needs to get fixed, sooner or later. For the time being you can still go to the (unsupported) old legacy-www.hpwren.ucsd.edu server, though legacy-www.hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/archive/index.html does not work there either. But you can certainly look at all l the cameras at www.hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/ and drill down to individual sites via the "details" pointers. That gets you, for example, to he new cameras on the big water tower at the Palomar Observatory at www.hpwren.ucsd.edu/cameras/S/SD/mpo.html. There you can scroll down to the "Archive" sections to access non-realtime images and time-lapse videos. This should then be the same before, where cdn.hpwren.ucsd.edu/RT/mpo-w-mobo-m.jpg gets you to the west view, which also shows the dome for the big 200" Hale telescope, cdn.hpwren.ucsd.edu/hpwren-cameras/mpo-w-mobo-c/2024/20240514/Q3.mp4 shows you a time-lapse video example from yesterday morning. We (actually: Greg Hidley) have been working on an HPWREN News article to document all this better, which hopefully should be posted soon. If anyone wants to get added to the email recipient list, you can send a request via the feedback mechanism referred to at the bottom of www.hpwren.ucsd.edu/ That in general is a more reliable way to contact us. Thank you for your interest in the data.

      That is a very good question. Yes, we normally use 1 minute intervals, but we have experimented for a while now to in addition also collecting 10 sec samples on a few of our sites. I am not sure yet what we would need in terms of data servers that process the images for more than the 300+ current imagers for fixed FoV. I could give you a URL for reaching the 10sec data, but there is no user interface. Actually, you can reach the 10 sec data via the "experimental" /IIFI interface, but if you are not careful that may cram 1,000 or more images into your web browser at the same time, but then gives you a Very Fast ability to go single frame back and forth in the image data set. Well, if you want to discuss it more, send us your email address via HPWREN's feedback means....

    That fire was crazy. I had just moved from Missouri to the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego in summer of 2003. The weekend before this happened I visited the Lagunas and Cuyamaca State Park and took a picture of myself hugging a huge fir tree in front of the park HQ. Went to bed one night to the 10pm news of a little fire burning out by Ramona. Woke up at 6am the next morning and the sky was red and ash was falling all over downtown... and Cedar Fire had crossed all the 12 lanes of I-15/163 junction. A few hours later its western edge was at the NE corner of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and the 805. Pandemonium all over town. That huge fir tree and all of the Cuyamaca State Park HQ, of course, burnt to the ground.

    Recommend narration done instead by someone with better developed speaking skills. The speakers monotonous speaking style lacks needed variance in rhythm, rate, tone and inflection. He could take speech lessons, but since he is so unskilled at this point in his life (which indicates he has never put more effort into respecting his listeners - it is quite painful to listen such a monotonous, non-dynamic speaker )he probably will remain ignorant of the importance of developing this skill. So Please, find someone who has better speaking skills and let them read the text.

      Bill: I understand your need for a captivating speaker, I really do. However, I am putting the videos together for documentation purposes and not for entertainment. Nobody makes money off those videos. They are all available for free and should not have commercials. We do not have to create them, and can just let it be. I for one was very pleased that the CDF Fire Captain flying on the Air Attack over the Cedar Fire and directing airdrops was willing to narrate the video as someone who really knew what he was talking about. In my opinion he is not a bad speaker, but I would not have cared if he were, since he had first hand knowledge of what happened. I think he also had quite a bit off class-teaching experience at CDF. Personally, I think it is unfair to denigrate a highly competent fire official, who has put his life on the line across many years for people like you, because you find it quite painful to listen to him. I would rather you just said thank you and went on your way.
